Warren,

I read with great interest about your ship, the Wasp and you might recall that I served on the Yorktown, CVS10, and Kitty Hawk, CVA63, back in the early 60s. I was in class #1 of the Naval Aviation Officer program in Pensacola in 1960. I was assigned to VAW11(Early Warning Squadron) in San Diego and made 2 cruises to WestPac and 1 to the Nuclear Test Range, Christmas Island in the short time I was in the Navy. We flew in AD5W aircraft off the Yorktown, which is in Charleston harbor now as a museum. The ADs were single engine prop planes with a crew of 3, pilot, radar officer, and technician. We had a detachment of 5 planes and lost 3 while I was aboard. 2 were pilot error and 1 was a cold cat shot. Fortunately, only 2 people were killed.

I was fortunate and had some hairy experiences but it was a great adventure. My next cruise on the Kitty Hawk was the maiden voyage of this new large carrier in 62-63. It was state of the art conditions. We flew in WF2 aircraft which were twin engined prop planes with a large dome on top.

Our squadron has had several reunions in San Diego and the last one was to have been in Pensacola Fla in November but the hurricane blew the roof off the hotel and we had to cancel. 500 people were coming and it had been planned for 2 years.
Keep up the good work on the website and thanks for listening to my "sea stories".

-Johnny Lomax, CHS class of ‘55
